Absent fathers linked to child poverty, low graduation rates, says Dr. Ben Carson

    By Staff Blogger

Dr. Benjamin Carson grew up in Detroit. He said he was tired of hearing people say how life was unfair and others were being unfair to them. Carson said that no one had stopped him in life. He went to the Wayne State University library and took advantage of programs that were meant to help kids achieve in life. He states that people need to be empowered to make choices and take advantage of programs that are available to help them have a better life.

Dr. Carson is a world-renowned neurosurgeon who came into the limelight when he performed a separation of conjoined twins that were joined at the head. His hometown and humble beginnings are never far from his mind. He has put out warnings about the cultural crisis in Detroit that is threatening the children in the city.

His speeches have grabbed the attention of Republicans and they are wondering if he is going to be a possible Michigan Senate candidate for 2014. He is retiring from Johns Hopkins hospital in June. Dr. Carson is viewed as a hero to many for his courage in bringing up the family implosion problem in Detroit.

Carson was raised by his single mother in the 1950s but this was uncharacteristic for the time. Now 80 percent of children in the Detroit area are being raised in single parent homes and it shows in the pathologies of the city. Low high school graduation rates, high crime rates, 49 percent adult illiteracy rates, and child poverty are just some of the major issues affecting the children in Detroit.

Carson has stated that he is in no way interested in running for a position in politics, but is hoping to fill some type of leadership void. He wants to bring family problems to light and help to fix these issues.
