A close but crucial victory over Savannah State- 18-15 – by Albany State keeps the Rams number one in HBCU Division II football, the SIAC and in prime position for a run at the championship. Virginia Union, after drubbing Bluefield State 70-14, remains atop the CIAA . And for the first time in 9 years, rising Johnson C. Smith remained in contention for a slot in the SIAC conference championship by virtue of its hard fought, well earned victory over Fayetteville State 17-14. Kentucky State, having resurrected its program, is enjoying a banner season after a weekend victory over Clark-Atlanta 43-28. Each of the aforementioned teams has an 8-1 record except Kentucky State at 7-2.
The next tier of D II teams includes Fayetteville State, Virginia State, Livingstone, Edward Waters and Savannah State.
The final weeks of the season should yield some exciting games and quality play from teams, players and coaches aspiring to be great, the last ones standing in both the CIAA and SIAC.
