Aurora, Colorado is Paying Elijah McClain’s Family a $15 million-dollar Settlement

 By Victor Trammell

Colorado’s city of Aurora has agreed to pay $15 million to resolve a federal civil rights complaint filed in the wake of Elijah McClain’s death in 2019.

The sum will be handed to McClain’s family, CBS’ branch in Denver, Colorado reports. City officials have agreed to the settlement with a nod, but no further information will be disclosed with the public until the specifics are finalized.

McClain’s mother, Sheneen McClain, filed the case in 2020. The complaint accused the city of Aurora, as well as the police officers and firefighters who were involved in her son’s murder. CBS added to the news by stating that no financial information would be disclosed since his mother and biological fat-her (Lawayne Mosley) are currently negotiating the settlement’s distribution.

This Friday, a court appearance has been set in accordance with this case (Nov. 19).

On August 24, 2019, cops confronted an unarmed McClain as he walked home from a business. He was tackled and put in a chokehold by officers. They then summoned first responders, who administered ketamine to him. He had a heart attack on his way to the hospital. He was proclaimed dead on August 30, 2019, after many days in the hospital.

Aurora paid a total of $7,397,814 in police claims from 2010 to 2019. This sum is doubled because of the McClain settlement. Previously, the city’s greatest wrongful death police lawsuit compensation was $2,600,000 in 2015.

Aurora carried a $10 million insurance policy on McClain at the time of his death. Aurora authorities have said that the $5 million discrepancy would be deducted from the city’s general budget.

Both Sheneen McClain’s and Lawayne Mosley’s attorneys declined to comment on the specifics of the settlement.
