     Covid deaths and infections in Florida are among the highest in the nation and world. Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis seems focused only on treating covid infected people who are overwhelming hospitals and not preventing the disease.

     Education has the power to transform lives, but in the United States, not all classrooms are created equal. The socioeconomic inequities that pervade the country’s education system have had a disproportionate impact on Black children; contributing to an ever-growing achievement gap and often clouding their sight when it comes to envisioning a limitless future and seeing beyond their circumstances. Social entrepreneur Taylor Culliver is on a mission to change the narrative and cultivate spaces where Black boys can feel seen, heard and valued through the creation of his nonprofit Brother Box.

     Poitier, who’s iconic 71-year career, included starring roles in “A Raisin in the Sun,” “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” and “Uptown Saturday Night,” was 94. His cause of death has yet to be confirmed.

     I was sad to learn the Biden administration plans to spend $1 billion to increase the nation’s slaughter capacity. Instead, the White House should invest these funds into open-access cultivated-meat research. For those who don’t know, cultivated meat is grown from animal cells, without slaughter. It’s better for the environment, public health and animal welfare.

     But Dr. King also stood as a tireless champion for economic justice. His last public speech, delivered a day before his 1968 assassination, was before a Memphis audience in support of a lengthy strike for fair wages among its Black sanitation workers. That prophetic oration, often referred to as his “Mountaintop” speech, also noted the city’s economic disparities.

     With variants straining short-staffed facilities across the country, some on the front lines are experiencing added physical, mental and emotional stress. “I’m feeling burnout,” said Smith, who saw her medical floor skyrocket with COVID cases amid the current surge. “The stress and anxiety I feel wears down on me mentally, emotionally and physically.”
