       As I write these words, I claim – or attempt to claim – the present moment, which is totally new to me . . . so new that when I got up yesterday morning, I didn’t know where my socks and underwear were, or indeed any of my clothing. I was about to scurry down to breakfast, here at the Appleton Retirement Community, where I now (apparently) live, but, unlike at my old house, I needed to get dressed first.

   Focusing solely on guns is not only simplistic, but also dangerous. Firearms are tools; people commit crimes. Efforts aimed at reducing violence must confront the complex web of societal neglect, poverty, systemic inequities, and mental health crises. A society that fails to ensure its citizens’ fundamental needs is effectively sowing the seeds of chaos and mass murders.

       At the request of Lauderhill Mayor Denise D. Grant, the Commission presented Ms. Edde Campbell with the prestigious Key to the City in recognition of her tireless and selfless service to the community. Ms. Campbell, a respected leader and advocate, was celebrated for her unwavering commitment to reentry efforts and homelessness support services for more than 20 years.

        Growing up in Northwest Fort Lauderdale, I didn’t always realize just how much was being poured into me. But as I reflect now in my role as a husband, father, community servant, and fraternity brother, I can clearly see the countless ways that prayer, perseverance, and patience shaped my path.

Recently, Florida Power & Light (FPL) rejected joining a settlement brought forth by the Office of Public Counsel (OPC), Floridians Against Increased Rates, and EarthJustice — representing Florida Rising and League of Latin American Citizens. The proposal outlines slashing FPL’s rate request nearly in half and lowers the return on equity (ROE) below the current level.
