     It was a shock to my system when I walked into the National Wildlife Federation conference in Lake Tahoe, Nevada late June. My body was still vibrating from the challenging drive from Sacramento – and by “challenging” I mean going up 7,000 feet over snowcapped mountains with winding hair pin turns through mostly forest, cliffs and sheer drop-offs.

“WORD! Celebrating 50 Years of Hip-Hop Culture” brings together literature and visual and performing arts, featuring leaders, authors and scholars of Florida’s hip-hop community, from July 13 to 15 at Broward County Library’s African American Research Library & Cultural Center (AARLCC), 2650 Sistrunk Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311.

     “We have had tremendous success, particularly over the last five years, of enhancing lives through quality and affordable education for all,” Haile said of Broward College which is repeatedly ranked as a top 10 college out of more than 1,000 colleges by the Aspen Institute for Community College Excellence. “We continue to uplift our students by increasing affordable educational access, providing customized learning experiences that result in job placement and creating partnerships in the community that result in a lifetime of positive impact.”

Those words start the “Florida Song.” In 2023, those lyrics go out to all football fans and all HBCU fans.  The Orange Blossom Classic is less than two months away and there is strife in the politics of Florida.  A series of laws passed by the legislature of Florida, which is Republican dominated to the tune of a super majority, that has caused angst among both those living in Florida and those who travel to it.

Lex Gillette became blind when he was just 8 years-old, but that didn’t stop him from going on to be successful in life. In his newest book, No Need For Sight When You Have A Vision: What Blindness Can Teach Us About Risk Leadership, he shares his personal journey of overcoming obstacles without the aid of eyesight, all while becoming a five-time Paralympic medalist and successful entrepreneur. He attributes his athletic and business success to having a clear vision, one that doesn’t require eyesight.

 Dr. Trent, a HBCU graduate and former secretary of education for the Commonwealth of Virginia, was appointed to this position by President Joe Biden in February of 2022. The White House Initiative on HBCUs is the most important entity for HBCUs to gain access to federal resources, including Title III, student aid, and grants and contracts from across 30+ federal agencies. Dr. Trent will address HBCUs working with the American Golf Industry Coalition.
