    Introduction of the oral birth control pill in 1950   ignited America’s sexual revolution. However, the full impact of the “pill” later occurred in the 1960’s. An overwhelming social and cultural revolution drastically changed individuals’ attitudes and morality towards sex. This liberalized attitude towards sex and morality also ushered in a breed of sexual ‘promiscuous predators and promiscuous partners.

     Recently, a Florida State Senator’s proposed bill that would require bloggers that commented or opined about Florida’s Governor or State Legislators, should register with the Florida State Government, pay a registration fee, and reveal who is paying the blogger.

Many of these threats have been made on social media and in the news by extremists aligning with some of Florida’s best-funded environmental activist groups. At the center of their agenda are all policies that seek to dehumanize us, take away our jobs and ultimately, destroy our Glades communities.

Among the significant strides our country has made to create a more equitable society, air travel does not always come to mind. However, it was not long ago that air travel was only for the elite. Airfares were prohibitively expensive, and flying on commercial airlines was a privilege that almost exclusively upper-class, white Americans could enjoy.

     It’s happening in Jackson, Mississippi, where state officials have a plan to stand up a new city police force that they would manage. And it’s happening in St. Louis, Missouri, where an outstanding young Black mayor – Tishaura Jones – is facing police unions and state legislators who want to wrest control of the police department from her. A state bill in the works would remove the city police force from city control and – you guessed it – put it under the control of a whiter, more conservative state government. 

     This week, six states asked the Court to permanently block the Biden administration’s student loan forgiveness program — a program that will provide critical relief to over 40 million borrowers most at risk of defaulting on their student loans when the repayment pause ends. In less than a month after the student debt relief application was available, 26 million people applied or were deemed automatically eligible for relief. The need and demand for this program has been undeniable. However, since the administration has been banned from implementing its program, the weight of student loan debt has continued to impact the lives of everyday Americans and has proven to have long-term effects on other aspects of their lives including homeownership.

     According to the most recent data from the National Center for Educational Statistics, only seven percent of K-12 public school teachers identify as Black. So, it’s no wonder El-Mekki remembers thinking about how many students don’t have the experience of people believing in them in a way that provides students space and guidance to lead.
