Artist Marvin “Murf” Murphy began his full-time career as a professional artist during the first year of the now-iconic Las Olas Art Fair. He continued showcasing his paintings with each Howard Alan Events festival, selling enough to eventually raise four children, and support the family through their respective college years. Now, Murf will be joined by his daughters Tyler, Kelsi, Brittany and Alanna as exhibiting artists during the return of the Las Olas Art Fair (Part I) on January 7 – 8, 2023.

     Back in August, I wrote that getting “back-to-school” this year would also mean getting back to fighting far-right attacks on education. The threats included a rising number of efforts to ban books, and the Right’s efforts to take over local school boards.

     Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan was a guest commentator on CNN’s coverage of the Georgia Senate Runoff between The Rev. Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker.  Duncan didn’t hold his tongue at all.  He lambasted former U.S. President Donald Trump for personally picking Walker for the race.  He pointed out that several of Trump’s handpicked candidates failed miserably in the mid-term elections.  He would emphatically call for the Republican party to distance itself from Trump.

     Given many Black Americans’ exposure to crypto, as well as the fact many hopped aboard late — investing at higher prices than their peers — these investors have been particularly impacted by crypto’s decline over the past year. Following the downfall of Sam Bankman-Fried and FTX in November, cryptocurrency trading volumes plummeted 50%. Since last year, crypto’s market cap has lost nearly three-fourths of its value, with bitcoin and ethereum, both down nearly 75% from their record-highs in November of 2021.

     According to the Death Penalty Information Center, 2,414 death row inmates awaited death in 2022. Eighteen of them were executed. Looking at the statistics makes it easier to overlook these individuals as just numbers. But Kevin Johnson left a journal behind, humanizing the heart-wrenching experience awaiting an inescapable death, per the Kansas City Star.
