Poems by Prisoners Inspire Visual Artists

    From Kay Renz

Bailey Contemporary Arts Center (BaCA) in Pompano Beach is proud to present From the Inside. This thought-provoking exhibition is designed to introduce, educate and cultivate the positive impact of poetry in the prison system. A collection of poems was curated and provided to some of South Florida’s up-and-coming visual artists, who interpreted the emotional messages, transforming the words into works of art in various mediums including fiber art sculptures, paintings, photographic collage and augmented reality. The exhibition will be on view from March 6 – April 23, 2020. The free opening reception is Friday, March 6, from 6 -10 p.m. during Old Town Untapped. For more information visit www.baileyarts.org.

From the Inside is presented in partnership with Free on the Inside Program. The program partners with state and federal prisons to bring spoken word and cultural arts into prisons in order to provide inmates with an experience that not only enriches their time of incarnation, but also helps aid the transition back into society.

“We are very proud to bring this remarkable multi-faceted exhibition to Pompano Beach,” said Phyllis Korab, Cultural Affairs Director. “Thanks to the work of Sharonda Richardson and Juliana Forero, we are able to experience the positive impacts of self-expression and get a glimpse into the emotions and psyches of the creatives behind the words.”

Poems were presented to an array of local artists to the inspiration for the visual works. Artists participating include Yolanda Friderici, Nick Henry, Felix Jackson, Justin Kolosick, Jill Lefkowitz, Roberto Navarrete, Felisa Prieto, Josepablo Serrano, Catalina Villegas.

Bailey Contemporary Arts Center is located at 41 NE First St., Pompano Beach, Fla., 33060.
