WASHINGTON — Hollywood songstress Britney Spears’ father, Jamie Spears, has filed a request in a Los Angeles court to entirely put an end to his daughter’s conservatorship of 13 years on Sept. 7, 2021.
The news comes as a shock as Jamie Spears was supposed to step down as a conservator of Spears’ estate at a court hearing scheduled for Sept. 29, 2021, but he wants to speed things up and end the long-term conservatorship once and for all.
In light of this move, Spears will be able to take control of her life and her financial decisions once again and make health care decisions for the first time in 13 years.
Spears entered conservatorship in 2008 after she had several mental public breakdowns. For more than ten years, her father had performed both functions as conservator of her estate and manager of her person, but due to his own health issues, he temporarily stepped down in 2019. Two years ago, Jodi Montgomery temporarily took over his duties.
Now in a petition filed with probate judge Brenda Penny on Sept. 7, 2021, Jamie Spears thinks that his daughter “should get that chance” to control her own affairs, as per reports.
“Ms. Spears has told this Court that she wants control of her life back without the safety rails of a conservatorship,” wrote Jamie Spears’ attorney Vivian Thoreen.
“She wants to be able to make decisions regarding her own medical care, deciding when, where, and how often to get therapy. She wants to control the money she has made from her career and spend it without supervision or oversight.”
“She wants to be able to get married and have a baby if she so chooses. In short, she wants to live her life as she chooses without the constraints of a conservator or court proceeding.”
“As Mr. Spears has said, again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter. If Ms. Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr. Spears believes that she should get that chance,” continued Thoreen in the legal statement.
Mathew Rosengart, Spears’ newly appointed lawyer, filed an official court petition in court to remove Jamie Spears as conservator from the pop star’s estate on July 26, 2021. Since the day Rosengart was appointed as Spears’ attorney, he has kept up intense pressure on Jamie Spears, accusing him of abusing his power over the singer and of “dissipating her estate.”
Post this, Jamie Spears had agreed to step down as the conservator of his daughter’s estate, but only after a negotiated settlement could be reached, as per the Aug. 12, 2021 court filing.
However, Rosengart refused Jamie Spears’ offer, suggesting he should resign immediately.
Rosengart has not, as of yet, taken the next step of seeking to end the conservatorship, as per reports. As an alternative, he has asked for an accountant to take control of Spears’ finances. Another professional, Montgomery, would continue to serve as conservator of Spears’ “person.”
In the recent legal filing on Sept. 7, 2021, Jamie Spears suggested that Penny could dissolve the conservatorship without requiring a further psychiatric evaluation, which had been regarded as a barrier to formal dissolution.
“Mr. Spears believes that Ms. Spears is entitled to have this Court now seriously consider whether this conservatorship is no longer required,” Thoreen wrote.
“This filing represents another legal victory for Britney Spears — a massive one — as well as vindication for Ms. Spears,” said Rosengart in a statement on Sept.7, 2021.
“It appears that Mr. Spears believes he can try to avoid accountability and justice, including sitting for a sworn deposition and answering other discovery under oath, but as we assess his filing (which was inappropriately sent to the media before it was served on counsel), we will also continue to explore all options.”
The Grammy-winning singer repeatedly attacked the conservatorship and her father during a public court hearing in June 2021.
During the hearing in July 2021, Spears testified that her father had “ruined” her life, which inspired her to bring a conservatorship abuse case against him.
