Brother of Trayvon Martin lands internship in The Office of Florida Congresswoman

     Jahvaris Fulton, 22, the brother of Trayvon Martin, testified on the witness stand during the first days of the controversial George Zimmerman murder trial.

Many in the media speculated about how hard it must have been for Fulton to testify on the stand in such a high-profile case in light of what happened to his late 17-year-old brother. However, Fulton handled himself on the stand with dignity when given the circumstances of such an emotional situation.

After the acquittal of Zimmerman on July 13, (who was not convicted of second-degree murder or manslaughter in the case) the nation reacted with a tide of protests and outrage. Martin’s family has repeatedly appealed for calm after the jury’s verdict. The family of Trayvon Martin also has a reason to celebrate something very positive despite not receiving justice for their young loved one.

According to NBC, Jahvaris Fulton is currently working as an intern in the office of Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL). A spokesperson for Rep. Wilson’s office confirmed that Fulton is a member of the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project.

Rep. Wilson founded this organization around 20 years ago. The 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project is drop-out prevention and mentoring program that addresses the needs of poor, at-risk boys in the Miami-Dade public school system. Fulton is a good candidate for the public office internship. He recently graduated from Florida International University.

President Barack Obama recently made a surprise visit to the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project members at Miami Northwestern Senior High School. Obama criticized the judge and jury for their work on the case and shared that he understood the frustration many people expressed after the verdict.

“I think it’s important to recognize that the African-American community is looking at this issue through a set of experiences and a history that doesn’t go away,” Obama said during his visit.
