Recently, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) Area Manager Sean October (left) and FPL Associate Engineer Maritza Herbert (right) deliver hurricane preparedness meal kits to seniors to help them prepare for the 2024 hurricane season in Broward County. It’s part of FPL’s commitment to powering strong communities, making Florida an even better place to live, work and raise a family. Each of the meal kits, courtesy of FPL in partnership with Sunshine Cathedral, contain water and a three-day supply of shelf-stable foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

   On Thursday, March 28, 2024, the District Judges of the U S District Court of the Southern District of California selected Benjamin Jerome Cheeks as its newest United States Magistrate Judge! He is the first African American Magistrate Judge to serve in the aforementioned district since the appointment and retirement of Magistrate Judge William (Bill) McCurine (2004 – 2014). The Honorable Judge Cheeks was officially sworn in (at an informal ceremony) on Friday, July 19, 2024, by the Honorable Dana M. Sabraw, Chief Judge of the United States District Court. In addition to the informal swearing in ceremony, a formal swearing in ceremony is scheduled to be held in November 2024.

       One hundred and seven Black colleges and universities with way more than a quarter of a million students alone, plus professors and staffs make for a small compact army! That’s the Historical Black Colleges and Universities known as HBCUs. Now I know there will be well-meaning key Kamala campaign staff who may mistakenly argue that colleges and universities are already covered. Those would most likely be people unfamiliar with how this piece needs to be carved out and handled.
