     In a startling turn of events, life in Dubai came to a sudden standstill during what was supposed to be a bustling week. An unexpected series of power outages plunged the city into darkness, disrupting daily routines and bringing businesses, transportation, and even essential services to a halt. Residents found themselves grappling with the challenges of navigating through the city without functioning traffic lights, relying on backup generators, or simply waiting for power to be restored.

      Schools in America don’t teach the history of the only successful Black slave rebellion in the Western Hemisphere. The audacious leadership of a former slave Toussaint L’ouverture wove the path to create Haiti. It was a masterful real life chess match with France, Spain, England and America. The History Channel wrote, “Saint-Domingue in the late 18th century thrived as the wealthiest colony in the Americas…”  Black Past noted, “In the 18th century, Saint Domingue, as Haiti was then known, had become France’s wealthiest overseas colony, generating more revenue for France than all 13 North American colonies for Great Britain.” 

It was Not a Competition;  it was a Celebration!” Hosted in partnership with the Dillard Center for the Arts Foundation, the Sound Check Band Showcase (Gym Battle) has become one of the most anticipated community events in South Florida.

Throughout the year, the Victory Black Box Theatre, located on the 3rd floor of Fort Lauderdale’s L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center, offers an impressive lineup of performances, classes and other fun events for the entire family.  YMCA of South Florida events that take place at the Victory Black Box Theatre are open to both members and non-members.  Many of these events are recurring.

     With violence by organized criminal groups continuing to escalate the humanitarian crisis in Haiti, South Florida Democratic U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has joined two other members of Congress and representatives of several Haitian-led organizations to urge more federal action to address the situation.

      Miami Gardens Democratic state Sen. Shevrin Jones announced Tuesday that he is running for chairman of the Miami-Dade County Democratic Executive Committee, following the removal of now-former party chair Robert Dempster last month. Jones says that, if elected, he intends to serve in that role only until the end of the year.

     During her confirmation hearings in 2021, Interior Department secretary Deb Haaland promised “to responsibly manage our natural resources to protect them for future generations—so that we can continue to work, live, hunt, fish, and pray among them.” Noting her Indigenous heritage, Haaland tweeted, “A voice like mine has never been a Cabinet secretary or at the head of the Department of Interior…. I’ll be fierce for all of us, our planet, and all of our protected land.”
