On Thursday, March 28, 2024, the District Judges of the U S District Court of the Southern District of California selected Benjamin Jerome Cheeks as its newest United States Magistrate Judge! He is the first African American Magistrate Judge to serve in the aforementioned district since the appointment and retirement of Magistrate Judge William (Bill) McCurine (2004 – 2014). The Honorable Judge Cheeks was officially sworn in (at an informal ceremony) on Friday, July 19, 2024, by the Honorable Dana M. Sabraw, Chief Judge of the United States District Court. In addition to the informal swearing in ceremony, a formal swearing in ceremony is scheduled to be held in November 2024.
This past week the Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue proudly honored the trailblazing legacy of Lieutenant Bobby G. Glenn, the department’s first African American firefighter. A special display featuring Lt. Glenn’s uniform was unveiled, celebrating his groundbreaking career and contributions to the community.

That’s the Historical Black Colleges and Universities known as HBCUs. Now I know there will be well-meaning key Kamala campaign staff who may mistakenly argue that colleges and universities are already covered. Those would most likely be people unfamiliar with how this piece needs to be carved out and handled.

The gathering took place from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center’s Black Box Theater, located at 1409 NW 6th Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL.
Frederick Douglass’s son, Major Charles Redmond Douglas, was long on intellect, but short on temper. He was a retired officer formerly with the 54th Massachusetts Colored Infantry. That was the first Black regiment established during the Civil War. He and his wife were refused service at a restaurant along the Chesapeake Bay. The disgusting reason was that they do not service colored people. That was paradoxical, because Massassuchetes fought on the Union side.
