Contributing to The Westside Gazette, a historical newspaper deeply embedded in the community’s fabric, is an exhilarating and humbling experience. Since childhood, I’ve revered its pages, once even seeing my mother, Cynthia Robinson, celebrated for her remarkable community endeavors.
In 2022 I was presented with the Centennial Leader Award by the National Parks Conservation Association for the difference I made connecting Americans to the national parks. That would not have happened if it wasn’t for The Westside Gazette which published the first story my husband Frank and I wrote about the parks and the environment in 1995.
In my 36 years of writing mostly for the Black press, I found the writers and readers share a passion to hear our story from our own voice. As an Alpha member, I take pride in being able to serve my community by writing our story. The current cauldron of Black history misinformation manifests the words of Samuel Cornish. The founder of the first Black paper said “… Too long have the public been deceived by misrepresentations, in things that concern us dearly…”
“40 Acres & A Mule’’ (40 Acres) is not just a pithy retort to a mundane question. It was part of a complex post Civil war plan by the government. It was a two-pronged proposal to effect punitive retribution on the South and constructively integrate 10 million former slaves into the Union.
On Saturday, February 10, 2024, the Broward County Democratic Black Caucus held its annual Black History Month celebration/fundraiser at the Herb Skolnick Center in Pompano Beach. President Robin Figueroa stated that the event is designed to stress the significance of Black History, highlight the importance of celebrating the accomplishments of Black people, promote voting, and ensure that African American contributions are NEVER FORGOTTEN!
