Florida A&M University’s (FAMU) School of Journalism & Graphic Communication (SJGC) is celebrating 50 years of journalism, marking a half-century of commitment to excellence in journalism education. As part of the celebration, the annual “Grads Are Back” program is scheduled during Homecoming Week beginning Tuesday, October 28, through Thursday, October 31. This year’s theme, “Grads Are Back 2024: Unified Voices of Truth, Integrity and Impact,” reflects the school’s enduring commitment to accurate, fact-based storytelling.

They are Baker, Brevard, Clay, DeSoto, Duval, Flagler, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands, Lake, Nassau, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Putnam, Seminole, St. Johns and Volusia counties.

        Though Vice President Kamala Harris has yet to visit Florida on her presidential campaign trail, her husband, Douglas Emhoff, has. The Second Gentleman made a quick stop in Miami-Dade to meet with voters and elected officials on Thursday at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex, hoping to spur civic engagement as the second week of early voting drew in.

  In a move to encourage civic engagement, the Broward County Board of Commissioners has announced that voters can take advantage of FREE bus and paratransit fares during the Early Voting Period and on Election Day. This initiative allows residents to travel on Broward County Transit (BCT) without any fare on November 2, November 3, and Election Day Tuesday, November 5, 2024, facilitating easier access to polling places. In Broward County, polling locations are open now through November 3, and then again on Election Day, operating from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Florida Memorial University has welcomed four new members to its Board of Trustees, which is responsible for the efficient and effective use of the institution’s resources. These new members will bring added knowledge and leadership to the existing board of community, corporate, and alumni leaders who are committed to expanding FMU’s academic excellence.

       At its peak the eugenics movement captivated White America, with a zealous hope that it could quietly erase away “the Black Garbage”of slavery. Variations of sterilization and eugenics were legally sanctioned in 32 states. Mississippi, North Carolina, California and  were the most fervid advocates of social engineering.  In 1961, a White doctor gave  Fannie Hamer a hysterectomy without her consent. PBS noted that the Civil Rights crusader coined the moniker a “Mississippi appendectomy.”
