The Banners’ acquisition of the plantation marks a significant moment in the ongoing struggle to preserve Black history. After years of discussions with the previous owner, Timothy Sheehan, about safeguarding this heritage, the sisters finalized the purchase in January for $750,000. With the transaction completed, they now hold stewardship over a property that witnessed one of America’s largest uprisings of enslaved people.

     “Today we turn a page in the book of our nation’s history — a history we write together,” he said upon taking office. “Not just because I have the honor of becoming the first Black leader in any European country, but because a generational dial has jumped too.”

Ryan Gainer, a 15-year-old Black teen with autism, was fatally shot by deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. The incident has once again brought attention to the use of force by police in cases involving mental health crises and its disproportionate impact on African Americans. According to the Los Angeles Times, Ryan became upset when his parents told him to finish his chores before allowing him to play video games or listen to music. DeWitt Lacy, a civil rights attorney representing Ryan’s family, said the teenager’s reaction led to him breaking glass on the front door.

Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Incorporated’s mission is “to unite in a sisterhood qualified business and professional women who are encouraging, inspiring, nurturing, and assisting persons engaged in business and professional vocations & entrepreneurial ventures.” For the new sorority year, Gamma chapter’s membership looks forward to building connections, while continuing existing ones and serving the local Washington, DC community under its new leadership.

     Black women have led the fight against pollution and the way toxins disproportionately harm Black, brown and low-income communities from the beginning. It’s an intersectional fight, with factors like age, disability, income, race and education all factoring into a person’s or community’s risks for toxic exposures.
