     As an older college student, Saul Guevara had to think about some of those things even before he graduated from the University of Southern California earlier this month in Los Angeles with a master’s degree in Communication Management. Now 28, Guevara has been a Covered California consumer for the past two years while finishing work toward his degree.

     Elizabeth Barker Johnson, a 99-year-old World War II veteran, finally accepted her college diploma seven decades after she completed her undergraduate career.

     Tupac Mosley, 17, received a text from his mother Tuesday evening asking him if he felt overwhelmed from the attention he is getting after receiving $3 million in scholarships and getting recognized as his high school’s valedictorian with a 4.3 GPA. 

Even it its infancy, segregation wouldn’t allow freed slaves and their descendants to participate in mainstream society, so they created their own. Doctors, lawyers, teachers, shoe cobblers, barbers, grocers — and perhaps most importantly, homeowners — made Orange Mound into a safe place for residents.

     “A lot of people come here from other states, and they’re sleeping in their car, and they have to figure out how to make ends meet to survive,” said “E-3,” a veteran and former homeless individual. “Rents are just too high. Unless you’re getting some type of government assistance, you are basically left to struggle, you are basically on your own.”

While the top three candidates this year are all men, women have again taken a leadership role in ensuring free and fair elections and they’ve been largely responsible for what’s believed to have been an electoral race free of determinative manipulation.
