The descendants of Earnest Lee Boyland from Mason, Tenn. filed a lawsuit in the 1990s alleging that the USDA adhered to discriminatory policies against African American farmers between the years of 1983 and 1997 when loans and other assistance programs were systematically denied to “Black farmers.”

The American Civil Liberties Union and Center for Media Justice today sued the FBI and Department of Justice for records related to the surveillance of Black people and Black-led organizations pursuant to a 2017 FBI Intelligence Assessment that asserts, without evidence, the existence of so-called “Black Identity Extremists Likely Motivated to Target Law Enforcement Officers.”
Two-time Stony Brook University graduate and Tuskegee University president, Dr. Lily D. McNair, has been selected to receive the Stony Brook University Distinguished Alumni Award, and will be honored by its Alumni Association on May 18, 2019, in a private ceremony in northern New Jersey. McNair, who earned her master’s and doctoral degrees at Stony Brook in 1983 and 1987, respectively, is Tuskegee’s eighth president and the first woman to hold this position in the institution’s 137-year history.
On Thursday, March 14, Tuskegee University publicly launch its two-year National Endowment for the Humanities grant, “Literary Legacies of Macon County and Tuskegee Institute: Zora Neale Hurston, Ralph W. Ellison, and Albert Murray” with an exhibit of quilts inspired by famed African American author and Notasulga native Zora Neale Hurston.

Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Latham & Watkins LLP, and Bryan & Terrill, PLLC filed a lawsuit challenging unlawful and unconstitutional jailing of indigent individuals for nonpayment of court-imposed fines and fees without consideration of their ability to pay. The complaint seeks declaratory and injunctive relief.
