     Back in 2021, Nick Cannon used his daytime talk show platform to pay off CDK’s remaining tuition balance at North Carolina A&T, helping the young HBCU student continue his journey without the burden of student debt. That gesture sparked national headlines and showed Cannon’s commitment to supporting HBCUs and their students beyond lip service.

       April 17, 2025, marks the 200th anniversary of that indemnity agreement. On Jan. 1 of this year, the now-former president of Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council, Leslie Voltaire, reminded France of this call when he requested that France “repay the debt of independence and reparations for slavery.” In March, tennis star Naomi Osaka, who is of Haitian descent, added her voice to the chorus in a tweet wondering when France would pay Haiti back.

Yet, the threat of the Cleveland suburb losing a federal grant because of her work only becomes more palpable as her friends and colleagues in the field of DEI lose their jobs — and the work they’ve dedicated their lives to hemorrhages esteem. “I’m just not the person who’s gonna operate in fear,” she said. “But I am a person who operates in reality.”
