Washington’s own long path of learning about the Johnsons and championing a local honor for them has finally come to fruition. He was there in 2020 when then-Mayor Lenny Curry unveiled early plans for Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing Park in downtown’s LaVilla area, on the site of the house where the brothers grew up. And Washington was there Thursday when Mayor Donna Deegan led the ribbon cutting that officially opened the $4.7 million park celebrating the Johnsons’ legacy.

But that’s probably not happening: Trump has a shaky past with Philadelphia. He didn’t win the popular vote in the 2016 or 2020 elections. In 2018, he uninvited the city’s NFL team, the Philadelphia Eagles, to the White House after many of the Super Bowl champions declined Trump’s invitation. The former president has also insinuated that “bad things” happen in the mostly Black city.
Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is next in line, having recently announced it’s changing the names of three elementary schools named after three white men — U.S. President James Monroe, Supreme Court Justice Melville Fuller and Christopher Columbus — according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

At age 13, Thomas worked at a sawmill company in Abbeville, GA. Several years later he was drafted into the US. Army at age 18 in 1943. He also completed his education while in the army. Thomas fought in World War II in the 784th Battalion as a PFC. His main job was the Ammunition Handler on a half-track. Thomas received an Honorable discharge on April 8, 1946. Later he married Valley Brown in 1948, and they moved into their new home in Durrs at 957 Northwest 16th Terrace. Thomas and his wife lived in this beautiful community until her untimely death in 1964.
