Update

Rates of new coronavirus cases have remained flat over the last week. Cases have decreased in the Northeast but has risen in the South and West. Hospitalizations are decreasing in the Northeast but rising in the Southern and Western states.

The country is now averaging 109,000 new coronavirus cases per day, a 1% decrease over the last two weeks.

The US has over 1 million recorded COVID-19 deaths.

Florida continues to record rising coronavirus cases. The state reports an average of 10,600 new cases per day, up 11% over the last two weeks.

Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 are up 32% in Florida.

Coronavirus deaths in Florida are up 61% over the last two weeks.

Coronavirus transmission risk is High in South Florida.

Announcement

Omicron variants B4 and B5 have been detected in South Florida. These are more transmissible than other Omicron variants.

B4 and B5 Omicron subvariants can evade the vaccines. Vaccines are still highly effective in preventing progression to severe illness, in the event of infection with coronavirus.

Other infectious disease note – Cases of Monkeypox disease are rising across the world. Five (5) cases have been reported in Florida. Three of these were reported in Broward County. The third case in Broward was acquired locally; the person had no history of travel.

Monkeypox is an infectious disease that causes pox-like vesicles on the face, hands, and other parts of the body. The disease is spread by direct contact with someone who is infected with the disease. Monkeypox is not airborne or spread by respiratory droplets, like coronavirus. Anyone is at risk for Monkeypox.
