Pandemic Update

There is a massive surge of new coronavirus infections and COVID-19 deaths in India. The US will restrict travel from India starting Tuesday, May 4, 2021. The restrictions do not apply to American citizens or lawful permanent residents returning to the US.

Americans are advised to avoid travel to India.

The daily average of new coronavirus cases in the US has fallen significantly over the last month. COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths, particularly among persons 65 years and older, have also dropped dramatically.

New coronavirus cases and deaths have dropped in Florida, but Broward County remains at an extremely elevated risk for new infections, particularly with new coronavirus strains.

Vaccine Update

Johnson and Johnson pharmaceutical has resumed the inoculation campaign for its Janssen COVID-19 vaccine, which was suspended following clotting incidents among 6 women. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared Johnson and Johnson for resumption of its inoculation campaign on April 23.

Individuals who receive the Janssen vaccine are advised to seek medical help immediately if they develop symptoms such as blurred vision, fainting, or seizures, within a month of their vaccination. These are signs of a possible blood clot – a rare but serious side effect.

42% of Floridians have received at least one dose of a vaccine. 27% are fully vaccinated.

The risk of infection with coronavirus and the possibility of developing COVID-19 disease remain extremely high. Remaining vigilant against disease transmission is critical. Practice good COVID-19 control strategies:

Observe social distancing guidelines (6 feet or more of separation from others).

Practice good hand hygiene (wash hands frequently with soap and warm water or use hand sanitizers).

Wear a mask when out in public.

Avoid crowded indoor locations where possible.
