    Important to Know

Coronavirus is impacting African Americans at disproportionate rates – African Americans are being disproportionately impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and Covid-19 infection.  Rates of Covid-19 infections and death are higher among African Americans than for other ethnic or racial groups. Underlying health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases increase the likelihood that an individual will suffer a moderate or severe illness. These chronic health conditions are more prevalent among African Americans and so an infection with coronavirus is more likely to lead to progression to a more severe illness with covid-19. While it is difficult to mitigate the effects of underlying health conditions, there are simple precautions that can greatly reduce the chance of becoming infected with coronavirus:

*Avoid contact with people who are sick.

*Wash hands often with soap and water – for 20 seconds or longer. In the absence of soap use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

*Avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands or after touching surfaces.

*Clean and disinfect high touch surfaces often.

*Wherever possible, stand at least six feet apart from other individuals

*Avoid crowded indoor areas and stay home if possible.

Food insecurity continues to be an urgent problem – The coronavirus has exacted a severe economic toll on American society and individuals. Many families are struggling to feed themselves and their families. Feeding South Florida is one of the largest food donation agencies in South Florida. They provide groceries at multiple distribution points each week. All are drive through events. Please visit their website, feedingsouthflorida.org, or call them at (954) 518-1818 to learn more about their food programs and distribution dates and locations.
