The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts is in full swing again. The Front Yard series of amazing concerts and musical presentations kicked off earlier this year and has now become an established locale for outdoor arts and entertainment. On any given evening, one can enjoy the eclectic venues which are scheduled and even sample items from the food trucks which are available for your pleasure.
The recent return to indoor performances has now begun and is welcomed by Orlando’s art loving community enthusiastically. “The Prom” entered its exciting engagement on the evening of December 7, and ended on Sunday, December 12. This contemporary comedic musical has its roots as it is loosely based on an incident which occurred several years ago. Nominated for seven Tony awards, the adaptation highlights the cancellation of a Midwestern high school prom which was then reinstated when both students and public outcry called for a different approach. Touching on contemporary issues of sexuality, inclusion and homophobic beliefs, the amazing amount of laughter this high energy musical produces tells you how far we’ve come. The standing ovation which the cast received was heartfelt and enthusiastic. Entertaining, hilarious, and truly energetic, “The Prom” was subsequently nominated for seven Tony awards and is now travelling the country delighting audiences in each city.
Here’s a list of several upcoming performances at the Dr. Phillips Center for Performing Arts Center you won’t want to miss.
Tim Allen, enters DPAC with his unique sense of humor and delivery on January 7 at 8 p.m.
On Sunday, January 23, look for Joss Stone and Corinne Bailey Rae to take to the stage each with their unique brand of musical delivery and musical acumen.
“Ain’t Too Proud”, the Tony award winning musical tribute to the incredible story of Motown’s Temptations, is set to enter DPAC on January 25. Scheduled to run through Sunday, January 30, most performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. except Saturday, January 29 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. On Sunday, January 30 performances will occur at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The Tony Award for Best Choreography was easily won by this production in 2019.
The busy and exciting schedule continues with the soulful R&B singer Gladys Knight. Ms. Knight enters Dr. Phillips Performing Center on Friday evening February 4 at 8 p.m. for a one-night performance.
On Saturday, February 19, prepare to be wowed by the Dancing With The Stars traveling dance cast members with performances at both 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Grammy award winning jazz guitarist Pat Metheny will take to DPAC’s stage on February 17 to the absolute and sustained delight of his fans. His last performance in the area was more than three years ago so he has been missed immensely. This talented jazz guitarist is noted for his Grammy award winning albums as well s his longevity in playing onstage. His following is extremely loyal.
Get ready for Alvin Ailey Dance Company who will thrill and delight you for several evenings starting with performances on February 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m. This outstanding dance company from New York has been forming for years and never disappoints.
Disney’s “Frozen” enters DPAC on Thursday, February 24 through March 6 with performances at 8 p.m. mainly. This incredibly popular musical will both delight and entertain the entire family Be sure to bring the kiddos!!
Look for Patti Labelle, or “Miss” Patti as she is often lovingly referred to as she too takes to the stage and blows everyone in the house’s mind with her still powerful chops on March 17 at 8 p.m.
The ever-popular Frankie Valli holds court on Sunday, March 20 at 8 p.m. in what will be an incredibly entertaining evening. The Four Seasons were an impactful group, but the songs recorded by Valli, and his backup group are still relevant.
“CATS” takes us all to a special place with performances on March 2 through April 3. This long running Broadway hit never ceases to amaze its audience with its emotionally satisfying hit songs and insightful costuming.
The incredibly side-splitting antics of Wanda Sykes will fill the house on May 12 at 8 p.m. Her comedic touch is impeccable and will have the entire audience in stitches.
Look for the epic wonders of Carole King, highlighted in the “Beautiful, The Carole King Musical” which enters DPAC on May 13. This phenomenal hit with all the hits like “You’ve Got a Friend”, “Up on The Roof” and “I Feel the Earth Move”, sits center state through May 15 at 8 p.m. each evening.
On May 27, look for the masterful Brit Floyd with an incredibly effective and entertaining tribute to rock star Pink Floyd.
On June 7 through June 12, the powerful musical Jesus Christ Superstar will transport you back to amazement of the original production in 2018.
