FDA pays tribute to one of Africa’s greatest champions, Sarah Moten who passed peacefully on Tuesday, July 9, 2013

The Foundation for Democracy in Africa

It is with great sadness that The Board of Directors and members of The Foundation for Democracy in Africa (FDA), announce the passing of Sarah Moten  Board Member and 2008 recipient of FDA’s highest honor –”The Medal of Glory Award.”

Sarah’s career in development spanned more than four decades during which she served as Chief, Africa Bureau, Office of Sustainable Development, Education Division, United States Agency for International Development (USAID); Director, Peace Corp in Africa; Deputy Assistant Secretary for Refugee and Humanitarian Affairs; and Coordinator, Education Democracy Development Initiative (EDDI) for Africa – an interagency initiative under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Most recently she served on the George W. Bush Institute, Women’s Initiative Policy Advisory Council.

Sarah will be forever remembered for her personal commitment to Africa’s development needs and a unique sensitivity to the educational needs of women and girls.

Funeral Services are Saturday, July 20, 2013 at the Carolina Missionary Baptist Church , 9901 Allentown, Road in Fort Washington, Maryland  20744. Visitation will take place from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and service to follow from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family will establish a Girl’s Scholarship to continue the legacy that Dr. Moten worked so tirelessly for during her career.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to Dr. Moten’s family, colleagues and the people of America and Africa whom she diligently served.
