 Edward Waters dominated the game against Virginia University of Lynchburg on Nov. 4 with a 41-17 victory, clinching the Tigers’ first winning season of football since 2004 when the Tigers finished that year 8-3

The Edward Waters University Tigers wrapped up their 2023 regular season with a 41-7 win over the Virginia University of Lynchburg (VUL) Dragons on Nov. 4.

The Tigers clinched their first winning season since 2004 when they were a member of the NAIA.

EWU racked up 487 yards of total offense and their defense forced four turnovers.

De’Shaun Hugee ran for 204 yards with three touchdowns for Edward Waters.

Jyron Russell threw for 255 yards with three touchdowns for the Tigers. He finishes the season as Edward Waters’ single season record holder in passing yards and passing touchdowns.

VUL (2-8) led three times in the first half, including 7-0 and 10-7 in the first quarter and 17-13 in the second.

Edward Waters (6-4) scored the game’s next 23 points; retaking the lead for good at 20-17 on Hugee’s 73-yard touchdown run with 1:05 left in the second quarter. The lead stood at halftime.

C.J. Brooks threw for 206 yards with two scores and two picks for VUL.

Johnny Jones added seven catches for 102 yards with two scores for the Tigers.

Elijah Harris had three catches for 68 yards with a score, Jason Scirigrione caught three passes for 49 yards and Wesley Nchinda had three catches for 43 yards with a touchdown for the Dragons.

The Tigers were led defensively by Jaren Wilson (7 total tackles, 2 for loss, 2 sacks, 2 forced fumbles) and Deangelo Sapp (6 total tackles).

Bethune-Cookman holds off Mississippi Valley State

The Bethune-Cookman University Wildcats took down the Mississippi State Valley University Delta Devils 20-7 on Nov. 2.

The Wildcats picked up their first win in the SWAC this season.

Bethune-Cookman (2-7, 1-5) struck first for a 7-0 when Mar’Kai Shaw hit Tink Boyd for a 41-yards touchdown pass on a halfback pass with 7:27 to go in the first quarter.

Mississippi Valley State (1-8, 1-5) pulled withing 17-7 on Jace Wilson’s one-yard run with 11:23 left in the third quarter.

Boyd finished with four catches for 76 yards with two scores for B-CU.

Wilson finished with 56 yards rushing with a touchdown for MVSU.

Tylik Bethea threw for 136 yards with a score and a pick while Jimmie Robinson ran for 61 yards for Bethune-Cookman.

Backup quarterback Jayden Sisk threw for 174 yards and Jaxon Davis caught four passes for 92 yards for Mississippi Valley.

MVSU held the advantage in total offensive yardage 394-292, passing yards 296-177, first downs 24-15, and time of possession 37:05-22:55.

B-CU’s defense recorded four sacks, forced three turnovers and had a critical fourth and goal stop at the five-yard line in the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats also got a blocked a punt by Daverno Ellington and a blocked field goal by Deonte Washington.

Dearis Thomas (11 total tackles); Stephen Sparrow (7 total tackles); Conroy Cunningham (7 total tackles); Adrian Hall, Jr (5 total tackles, 1.5 sacks); Omari-Hill Robinson (1 interception); Eddie Walls (6 total tackles, .5 sack); Ebenezer Dibula (6 total tackles, .5 sack); Darnell Deas (1 interception) was among B-CU’s defensive standouts.

B-CU was 0-for-9 on third-down conversions but 3-for-4 in red zone scoring chances.

MVSU was 5-for-14 on third-down conversions, 1-for-5 in red zone scoring chances and missed two field goals.

Bethune-Cookman hosts the Alabama A&M University Bulldogs (4-5, 2-4) on Saturday, Nov. 11. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.

FAMU pulls away from Alabama A&M

The Florida A&M University Rattlers pulled out a 42-28 road win over the Alabama A&M University Bulldogs on Nov. 4.

The win assured the Rattlers will host the SWAC championship game at Bragg Memorial Stadium on campus in Tallahassee on Dec. 2.

Five different players scored touchdowns for FAMU’s offense while their Dark Clouds defense recorded 11 tackles for loss and six sacks.

Florida A&M (8-1, 7-0) led 17-0 after Lovie Jenkins’ 24-yard punt return with 7:48 to go in the first quarter.

Alabama A&M (4-5, 2-4) took a 21-17 lead after Ryan Morrow’s eight-yard run with 8:20 remaining in the second quarter.

FAMU scored the game’s next 24 points, including taking a 24-21 lead on Kelvin Dean’s four-yard run with 6:31 left in the second quarter. The lead stood at halftime.

FAMU held the advantage in total offensive yardage 348-339, rushing yardage 103-58 and time of possession 31:21-28:39.

Alabama A&M held the advantage in passing yards 280-245.

The Rattlers had one turnover and 12 penalties for 106 yards.

The Bulldogs committed two turnovers and six penalties for 46 yards.

Jeremy Moussa threw for 245 yards with a touchdown and a pick; Terrell Jennings ran for 44 yards and Jeremiah Pruitte caught two passes for 82 yards for FAMU.

Quincy Casey threw for 280-yards with two touchdowns and a pick for Alabama A&M.

Donovan Eaglin ran for 61 yards with a touchdown; Jacolby Hewitt caught six passes for 98 yards with a score and Kennan Hambrick had six catches for 73 yards for the Bulldogs.

Marcus Riley had three catches for 71 yards with a touchdown; David Mingo caught three passes for 55 yards while Dean, Kareem Burke and Jaquez Yant all ran for a score for the Rattlers.

FAMU was led defensively by Lovie Jenkins (9 total tackles, 2 for loss, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble); Isaiah Major (8 total tackles); Kendall Bohler (8 total tackles); Deco Wilson (5 total tackles, 1 forced fumble); Johnny Chaney, Jr. (6 total tackles (6 total tackles, 1 fumble recovery); Javon Morgan (5 total tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception) and Khalil Huner (1.5 sacks).

Florida A&M hosts the Lincoln University (California) Oaklanders on Nov. 11. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.

Florida Memorial tops Thomas University

The Florida Memorial University Lions defeated the Thomas University Night Hawks 37-24 for a Sun Conference road win on Nov. 4.

Cedquan Smith threw for 282 yards with three touchdowns for FMU.

The Lions outgained the Nigh Hawks 489-254 in total offense; 286-110 in passing yards and 203-144 in rushing yards.

FMU also held the advantage in first downs 26-12, time of possession 31:34-28:26, third-down conversions 8-for-12 to 4-for-14 and redzone scoring chances 5-for-5 compared to 0-for-1.

Florida Memorial (6-3, 5-1) jumped out to a 30-7 lead after Charles Philias’ one-yard run with 9:09 to play in the third quarter.

Thomas (1-7, 1-5) got within 30-16 on Charles Britt’s 49-yard touchdown pass to Jarek Foster with 10:50 to play.

James Amaker ran for 79 yards with a touchdown for Thomas.

Walter Wilbon ran for 108 yards with a touchdown for FMU.

Foster finished with two catches for 66 yards with a score and Brandon Denmark four catches for 45 yards for the Night Hawks.

Michael Caballe ran for 80 yards, Corey Stanley caught eight passes for 72 yards, David Studstill had four catches for 43 yards with a score and Markell Lee had a 39-yard touchdown catch for the Lions.

Keon Brown had (6 total tackles, 2.5 for loss, 1 sack) and Joshua Mims (6 total tackles) led FMU’s defense.

Florida Memorial hosts the Kieser University Seahawks (7-2, 6-0) on Nov. 11. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
