Members of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) were among the honorees at the 49th Annual Suncoast Regional Emmy Awards held on Dec. 6 in Hollywood, Florida. The ceremony recognizes excellence in television across Florida as well as markets in Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Puerto Rico.

Emerald Morrow, an investigative reporter for 10 Tampa Bay and vice president of the Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists (TBABJ), won three Emmy awards. Other NABJ member winners include Spectrum Bay News 9 reporter and TBABJ president Saundra Weathers; Spectrum Bay News 9 anchor and reporter Dalia Dangerfield, also a TBABJ member; and Spectrum News 13 anchor Tammie Fields, who serves as president of the Central Florida Association of Black Journalists.

Dangerfield, Fields and Weathers won Emmys for their reporting in the “Justice for All’’ series. Their award-winning story examined community efforts to reclaim long-neglected African American gravesites. The project aired on Spectrum Bay News 9 and Spectrum News 13.

“The people who share their stories are the real winners here when it’s all said and done,’’ Weathers said. “The special we won for was for people who are literally not able to speak for themselves—buried in cemeteries all over the country, forgotten. It was an honor to amplify their stories.’’

The Suncoast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, a nonprofit organization, oversees the regional awards each year.
