Taste Test: There’s no doubt that eating and drinking is one of the most quintessential ways to experience a new travel destination. From local restaurants and food trucks to famed bars, pubs and clubs, exploring a city’s nightlife is the ultimate form of adventure – and it makes for picture perfect Instagram posts!
Alcohol.org, providers of treatment information for alcohol and substance addiction, studied 1,000 Instagram posts from travellers in 143 cities across the world (tagged with either #VacationMode or #Vacay) in an attempt to understand the influence of alcohol in people’s vacations.
The analysis found that a whopping 7 out of the top 10 holiday destinations featuring alcohol were in the USA! The top 5 were exclusively USA cities:

It also found that Fort Lauderdale emerged as one of the booziest destinations in the world, with 3.6% of vacationers here hashtagging alcohol. Sometimes called Fort Liquordale, this city is well-known for its round-the-clock entertainment to keep the party going from sunset to sunrise. Tourists can expect to delve into dive bars and pubs, restaurants, casinos and an assortment of cocktail lounges and breweries downtown for the ultimate night out.
Portland, Oregon topped the list with 9.9% of pictures featuring alcohol – perhaps this is due to Stumptown being best known for its vibrant beer and music scene. In second place was Denver, Colorado (8.5%), which is interesting considering The Centennial State is typically famous for its marijuana tourism. One would assume most pictures would feature vacationers smoking joints rather than consuming liquor! In third place was New Orleans, Louisiana where Mardi Gras is a hugely popular occasion – one of the biggest parties of the year in celebration of the last day before Lent. The Big Easy is also famous for its legendary jazz scene, with a thriving theater district and lots of historically acclaimed bars and clubs.
You may be having the time of your life on vacation, but it’s crucial to exercise caution when consuming alcohol. While a cold beer may sound ideal during the warmer months, combining alcohol and rising temperatures can be extremely dangerous. Alcohol acts as a dehydrator, which can result in heat stroke and exhaustion. In fact, up to 70%** of all water recreation deaths of teens and adults involve liquor consumption.
It was discovered that – perhaps unsurprisingly – college students have a particular penchant for binge drinking during vacations. According to recent statistics* over 1 in 3 college students between the ages of 18 – 22 reported binge drinking at least once. It’s no secret that heavy drinking during vacations like Spring Break may seem like a rite of passage, but it can result in an increase in injuries and other health consequences.
The most photographed drinks were cocktails, with over 1/3 (36%) of pictures containing these – perhaps in response to their typically colorful presentation.
(Un)Like for liquor? The study also revealed that posts featuring alcohol gained approximately half as many likes as those which didn’t. People might not be as interested in your drink consumption as you think!
