Marie Waugh Appointed to North Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners

    By Jennifer Smith

The North Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners unanimously named Gino Santorio President/CEO of Broward Health. Santorio assumes the role effective immediately.

“I am excited to have been selected to lead Broward Health,” stated Santorio. “Our team is motivated and looking forward to building on our successes. We are committed to our mission of providing the highest quality of care.”

Santorio is known for his healthcare leadership expertise of empowering organizations to optimize growth and performance. Since joining Broward Health in September 2017 as executive vice president and chief operating officer, Santorio has established significant changes that have positively impacted the stability of the healthcare system. He oversaw nearly $1.2 billion inoperating revenue and more than 62,000 inpatient admissions during fiscal year 2017 and helped the system save more than $31 million in contract renegotiations, operational improvements and a reduction in labor costs.

Before joining Broward Health, Santorio served as senior vice president and chief executive officer for Jackson North Medical Center and was VP/COO of Jackson Memorial Hospital. He has served as COO and CFO/Hospital Compliance Officer at Spring Hill Regional Hospital in Spring Hill, Florida, and assistant CFO at Brooksville Regional Hospital.

Santorio has a master’s degree in public administration from the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy at the University of Albany in New York; a bachelor’s degree in business leadership from Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York, where he graduated magna cum laude; and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE), a professional certification sponsored by the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).

“Gino is innovative and forward-thinking, and we are confident he will bring Broward Health to the next level of service,” said Andrew Klein, Chairman of the North Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners. “This is an excellent step in the right direction for the organization.”

The North Broward Hospital District, which conducts business as Broward Health, also welcomed new commissioner Marie Waugh at its December 12 board meeting. Waugh’s term began November 30, 2018, and ends June 29, 2021.

Waugh is chief human resources officer for APTIM, an engineering/program management corporation specializing in infrastructure, power and environmental services. Waugh is responsible for performance, benefits, compensation and recruiting. Prior to her work with APTIM, Waugh served as senior vice president of human resources for SUEZ, one of the nation’s leading environmental organizations.

Waugh holds a B.A. in business administration and marketing from Baruch College of New York.

In other news, Moody’s Investors Service has changed the rating outlook for the North Broward Hospital District to stable from negative.
