The Florida Memorial University Lions picked up a thrilling 34-29 homecoming win over the Webber International University Warriors at Betty T. Ferguson Stadium in Miami Gardens on Oct. 21.

It was a Sun Conference win for the Lions.

Webber International (1-6, 0-4) took a 29-26 lead in the fourth quarter on a nine-yard touchdown pass from Trent Grotjan to DJ Cloud.

Florida Memorial (4-3, 3-1) was able to respond when a player hit Bently from three yards out with 6:49 to play.

Cedquan Smith threw for 178 yards with two touchdowns and one interception and ran for another score for FMU.

Grotjan threw for 129 yards with two scores and a pick for Webber.

Frank Bently caught three passes for 41 yards with two touchdowns, Quino Mauricette ran for 125 yards and Marcus Barthel had three catches for 65 yards for FMU.

Terry Weems, Jr. ran for 85 yards with a touchdown and caught three passes for 38 yards for the Warriors.

The Lions were led defensively by Daeshawn Davis who had seven tackles, one sack and a force fumble along with Marcel Blocker who had two tackles and a pick six.

Florida Memorial travels to Lakeland to play the Southeastern University Fire (4-3, 3-1) on Oct. 28. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.

 

FAMU beats Southern

The Florida A&M University Rattlers battled back from an early deficit to take down the Texas Southern University Tigers 31-21 in Houston, Texas on Oct. 14.

Texas Southern (2-5, 1-3) led 14-0 when Jace Wilson found Trenton Leary for a four-yard touchdown pass with 6:17 to play in the second quarter.

FAMU (6-1, 5-0) scored the next 31 points, including a 21-0 in the second quarter.

The Tigers led 14-7 at the half.

The Rattlers led 28-14 when Jeremy Moussa hit Kareem Burke from 17 yards out with 1:35 remaining in the third quarter.

FAMU racked up 435 yards of total offense, including 255 on the ground.

TSU had 309 yards of total offense but was just 4-for-12 on third downs.

Moussa threw for 180 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for Florida A&M.

Wilson threw for 178 yards with three touchdowns and an interception for Texas Southern.

LaDarius Owens ran for 128 yards and Jyrin Johnson caught four passes for 67 yards and a score for the Tigers.

Kelvin Dean ran for 83 yards with a touchdown and Jamari Gassett caught three passes for 77 yards with a score for the Rattlers.

Isaiah Major (5 total tackles), Kym-Mani King (5 tackles); Gentle Hunt (2 sacks) and Lovie Jenkins (3 tackles, 1 interception) paced FAMU defensively.

Florida A&M hosts the Prairie View A&M University Panthers (3-4, 3-1) for homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 28. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. at Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee.

 

B-CU falls to Southern in Jacksonville     

The Bethune-Cookman University Wildcats lost to the Southern University Jaguars 28-18 at TIAA Bank Stadium in Jacksonville on Oct. 21.

It was the second straight year that the Wildcats hosted a game in that location and came up short.

Bethune-Cookman (1-6) struck first and led 7-0 when Luke Sprague connected with Omari Stewart for a 43-yard touchdown pass with 4:05 to play in the first quarter.

Southern (4-3, 3-1) took control and led 28-10 when Gary Qualls, Jr. blocked a punt and scooped the ball up for a score with 9:04 to play.

The Jaguars held a 14-10 advantage at halftime.

Kendrick Rhymes ran for 128 yards with a touchdown for Southern.

Luke Sprague threw for 159 yards with a touchdown and interception for Bethune-Cookman.

Southern racked up 338 yards of total offense, including 182 on the ground.

B-CU held the advantage in first downs 19-14 and passing yardage 237 to 156.

The Wildcats had 280 yards of total offense, including 43 on the ground and were only 4-for-18 on third downs.

Harold Blood threw for 156 yards, including a 57-yard touchdown pass to August Pitre for the Jaguars. Blood also ran for a score.

Tylik Bethea threw for 78 yards with a touchdown and Stewart caught six passes for 62 yards with a score for the Wildcats.

B-CU was led defensively by Dearis Thomas (13 total tackles), Eddie Walls (6 total tackles, 1.5 sacks) and Conroy Cunningham (5 total tackles, 2 sacks)

Bethune-Cookman travels to Grambling State University (3-4, 2-2) on Saturday, Oct. 28. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. EST.

Edward Waters rallies past Albany State

Jyron Russell’s one-yard touchdown pass to Deven Thompson with eight seconds to play lifted the Edward Waters University Tigers past the Albany State University Rams for a 31-27 win on Oct. 21.

It was the fifth straight win and second consecutive last-second win for the Tigers, all coming in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play (SIAC).

Albany State (4-4, 4-2) led 24-7 after Frederick Gaines 17-yard touchdown run with 9:46 to play in the second quarter.

Edward Waters (5-3, 4-2) would go on to outscore the Rams 24-3 the rest of the way including 14-0 in the last three minutes.

EWU outgained ASU 391-282 in total offensive yardage including 281-97 in the air.

The Rams held the advantage in rushing yardage 185-110.

Russell threw for 281 yards with three touchdowns for Edward Waters.

Gaines ran for 143 yards with two scores for Albany State.

Johnny Jones had seven catches for 77 yards with two scores and Nathan Rambert caught four passes for 79 yards for the Tigers.

EWU was led defensively by Widmyer Garcon (13 total tackles) and Ahmaud Jordan (10 total tackles).

Edward Waters travels to Columbia, South Carolina to face the Allen University Yellow Jackets (5-2, 4-2) on Oct. 28. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.
