Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies of Broward County announces The BJ’s Charitable Foundation Grant for $10, 000

By Babette Ferre-Kosar

Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County, Inc. recently received a $10,000 grant from the BJ’s Charitable Foundation.  Funds from the BJ’s grant will be used to support the Oral Health for Pregnant Women program, which provides a community-based approach to improving oral health for low-income, culturally diverse pregnant women, mothers and women of childbearing age, increasing the knowledge about the relationship between poor oral health and prematurity.

HMHB of Broward imple-mented this important program in the Broward County communities that are at risk in 2012.  The program targets a population of 1,500 who live in Broward County, primarily in zip codes with high rates of pre-mature births and infant deaths.

HMHB/Broward formed a collaboration with Nova South-eastern University (NSU) Dental School to create a risk assessment tool, curriculum and pre/posttests for culturally diverse low-income mothers.  The screening tool will be completed by a Case Manager to identify women with high risk for poor oral health and/or in need of dental services by referral to dental professionals

“The BJ’s Charitable Foundation is dedicated to supporting hunger prevention, self sufficiency, healthcare and education in the communities surrounding our Clubs,” said Jessica Newman, Executive Director of the BJ’s Charitable Foundation. “BJ’s Charitable Foundation has donated funds to nonprofit charitable organizations across our footprint during this grant cycle, and we hope these donations benefit the incredible efforts of our partners working to impact the lives of individuals and families and enable them to continue to provide crucial services to those in need.”

BJ’s Charitable Foundation was established with the mission to enrich every community BJ’s Wholesale Clubs serve.  The Foundation supports nonprofit organizations that primarily benefit the underprivileged in the area of basic needs (hunger prevention, self-sufficiency, education and health).
