One Howard University alum has reached an extraordinary life milestone — her 105th birthday. And her community is joining the exciting celebration.

Hortense McClinton welcomed her 105th year of life on August 28. And she was joined by her Delta Sigma Theta sorority sisters for her big day.

Several members of the Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta at Howard University threw McClinton a birthday party at her senior living center in Silver Spring, Maryland, WUSA9 reports.

McClinton is a 1938 graduate of Howard — where she earned her bachelor’s degree in social work. She is also a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where she earned her Master of Social Work degree.

She went on to make history as the first Black faculty member at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1966.

And in May 2022, UNC-Chapel Hill renamed a residence hall after McClinton.

“I just never expected this, ever,” McClinton said at the dedication ceremony for McClinton Hall, reports The News & Observer. “And I appreciate it.”
