Indian Paralympian Wins Bronze In 50 Meters Rifle Shooting Event

TOKYO — Avani Lekhara, the Indian shooter on Sept. 3, won a bronze medal in the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics under the category of R8 women’s 50 meters rifles 3P SH1 event.

It is Lekhara’s second medal in the ongoing Paralympics as she had won gold earlier on Aug. 30.


“India’s Golden Girl — Amazing Avani !!! @AvaniLekhara has been absolutely awesome at #Tokyo2020 #Paralympics by winning her 2nd medal! History has been made! Bronze in Women’s 50m Rifle 3P SH1 final,” tweeted Anurag Thakur, India’s Union Minister for Information & Broadcast and Youth Affairs & Sports.

She was at the fourth position at the end of the kneeling round with a score of 149.5 points.

The 19-year-old Indian athlete slipped into the sixth position following the conclusion of the prone round. After shot 30, Lekhara had 303.4 points.

Lekhara then moved to fifth position as she started the elimination round on a high. Continuing her good run, the Indian athlete then moved to fourth position at the end of two series in the standing position.

In the final few minutes, Lekhara registered a perfect score to clinch a bronze medal.

Earlier in the day, Lekhara reached the finals of the R8 women’s 50m rifle 3P SH1 event after finishing second in the qualification round.

Lekhara shot a total of 388, 393, and 395 in Kneeling, Prone, and Standing rounds, respectively.

Lekhara, on Aug. 30, had created history by winning the gold medal. The 19-year-old became the first woman from India to win a Paralympics gold medal. Lekhara had finished with a Paralympic Record, and in-process equaled the World Record with 249.6 points.

Lekhara was showered with congratulatory posts following her feat.

Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, said that he is Elated by the stupendous performance of Lekhara. He also congratulated her on bringing home the bronze medal. Wishing her the very best in her future endeavors.

The Youth Congress, the Youth Wing of Indian National Congress also sent their warmest regards to the Indian shooter.

“Congratulations, girl! Avani Lekhara wins her 2nd medal in the Tokyo Paralympics; she won the bronze medal in the R8 women’s 50m rifles 3P SH1 event. The whole nation is proud of you,” they tweeted.

Coach of Avani Lekhara, Suma Shirur, the national high-performance coach of the junior rifle team, has been a key influence behind the success of the Tokyo Paralympics gold medal.
