Kollege Corner The Rundown “Welcome Back”

Come on in, come on in, come on in, come on in, come on in, as Ms. Ferguson, Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment, often exclaims. Where are my prospective freshmen, high school seniors, parents, and extended family members? Over the next 10 months, I invite you to join me on a journey through my HBCU college experience in this summer series.

Just as I eagerly anticipated attending Clark Atlanta University, I am equally thrilled to return home to reconnect with family and friends. Summer in Florida brings its unique energy, making it the perfect time to come back and reflect on the adventures of the past year.

Let’s start with year one. Freshman life is an immersive experience, filled with lessons in time management and independence. From mastering the cafeteria schedule to learning to strike a balance between academics and social life, every day brings new challenges and opportunities for growth.

Building connections takes time. Whether it’s forming peer groups, forging bonds, or making friends, it’s essential to understand that relationships develop gradually. Embrace the diversity of personalities and perspectives and remember to be supportive while staying true to yourself.

Navigating the logistics of college life, from online shopping to navigating mailroom queues, can be a test of patience. However, these challenges are all part of the rich tapestry of HBCU life, where every experience contributes to our personal and cultural growth.

As I embark on this summer series titled “The College Corner,” I am excited to share my first-year experiences, filled with culture, life lessons, and unforgettable moments. Join me as we explore the vibrant world of HBCU education and all it has to offer.
