Betty Joe Green is an active and vibrant individual who enjoys walking on the beach, working out, swimming and spending time with her grandchildren. However, her active lifestyle was severely interrupted when she developed unbearable back pain that began impacting her life.

“I was in excruciating pain,” said Green, who is a Lauderhill resident. “Even taking a single step was painful.”

The 71-year-old retired hairstylist decided to seek medical attention after six months of constant pain that showed no signs of improvement. She was referred to Daniel Klinger, M.D., a neurosurgeon at Broward Health. Following an X-ray and MRI, Dr. Klinger determined that the pain was coming from her lower spine and diagnosed her with lumbar spondylolisthesis and spinal stenosis. He recommended a minimally invasive spinal fusion to alleviate her suffering.

“The spinal fusion procedure aims to reinforce the spine’s structure by fusing two vertebrae together, which helps in reducing pain in cases where instability is caused by the vertebra shifting on each other,” Dr. Klinger explained.

Green was relieved to discover that there was a solution for her debilitating condition. “Dr. Klinger’s explanation, using diagrams and models, made me feel confident and at ease,” Green said. “His approach was incredibly reassuring.”

In August 2023, Green was eager and anxious for her surgery. She appreciated the kindness and attention to detail of the entire caregiving team. “Broward Health Medical Center has been my hospital for years, and I knew I was in excellent hands,” Green said.

During the procedure, Dr. Klinger performed spinal fusion by accessing the spine from her back, making two small incisions and placing screws to stabilize the vertebra and decompress the nerves.

Throughout her recovery, Green learned the importance of taking gentle steps and avoiding harsh movements. She began swimming therapy as part of her rehabilitation.

A year after her surgery, Green is thrilled to have regained her mobility. She is now back to being active, going to the gym and swimming, all while feeling grateful for the exceptional care she received at Broward Health Medical Center.

“The entire team was informative and supportive. They treated me like royalty,” Green said.
