Oolite Collaborations June 5 – September 24, 2021 – Opening Reception: June 5, 5-7pm
The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood is pleased to present in partnership with Oolite Arts, Black Castor Oil, the debut solo exhibition by Miami-based artist Mark Fleuridor. This exhibition in Gallery 2 at the Center is the first in our new Oolite Collaborations series with Oolite Arts based in Miami Beach.
Black Castor Oil is a journey of self-exploration and a means to understand and portray protection and love. The exhibition examines the relationships between Fleuridor’s family members as it recollects memories of nurture and healing. Through a variety of mediums, including watercolor, acrylic, quilting, and screenprints, Fleuridor’s vivid portraiture conveys personal experiences and the protective environments of his loved ones. Through his process, Fleuridor learns to understand his background by dissecting his own memories and family narratives.
Fleuridor is a Haitian-American artist and current artist-in-residence at Oolite Arts. Past residencies include the Vermont Studio Center and the Oxbow Artist Residency in Michigan. Fleuridor has exhibited his works in Idiom and Taxonomies (curated by Laura Marsh), Oolite Arts; We are One at Creative Alliance in Baltimore, MD; and B_19 (Best of Baltimore 2019) at Baltimore City Hall. Fleuridor received his BFA in Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). He is a recipient of the Redbull Artist Grant 2020 and the Oolite Arts Ellies Awards 2020 for his project Being Held, a public mural in Miami.
The Oolite Collaborations series celebrates the Center’s and Oolite Arts foundational work in advancing the creative and professional practices of emerging South Florida visual artists. This cross-county partnership of the two organizations provides a unique discourse comprised of first-time exhibitions featuring new work, plus written essays and support programming.
A text for the exhibition will be written by independent curator and cultural critic Larry Ossei-Mensah. Mark Fleuridor: Black Castor Oil is organized by Meaghan Kent, Curator of Exhibitions at the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood. Also on view at the Center during these dates is Artists and Identity: Portraiture, Performance, Doppelgängers, and Disguise in the Main Gallery, and a diverse exhibition of international masks from the Collection of Dr. Donna L. Goldstein in the upstairs Community Gallery.
