Marvin Scott, Jr., a nursing facility administrator who impacted his community by touching the lives of many youngsters as a youth football coach, has died.
He was 69.
His funeral service is Saturday, Sept. 27, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Calvary Assembly at 700 Bellevue Ave., Daytona Beach.
Visitation arrangements were still in progress as of Daytona Times’ Wednes- day deadline.
Scott will be laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery at 320 White St. following the service. Gainous-Wynn Funeral Home is in charge of arraignments.
Scott was a devout Christian and served as a deacon at Mt. Calvary Assembly in Daytona Beach.
Kenny Scott, Sr., Marvin Scott’s brother, is also a longtime former youth, former high school and former semi-pro football coach.
Scott told the Daytona Times, “My brother was a very strong-minded person.
He always was family oriented. He gave his all to the community, especially working with the youth. He was also a very spiritual person.”
Daytona Beach/Volusia County NAACP President Cynthia Slater was also Scott’s lifelong friend. The two attended school together from Elementary school through college.
“I’ve known “Bear” since childhood. He was a fun-loving friend. He lived on Lane Street just two streets over from Fulton where I lived. We both graduated high school Class of 74. He was an outstanding football player at Bethune-Cookman. I was a cheerleader. My greatest memories of Bear was during our childhood where we made up and played games together, we went soda bottle hunting, got into trouble together and grew up as sisters and brothers. I will truly miss him.”

Marvin Scott Jr. was born on Aug. 15, 1957, in Daytona Beach to Marvin Scott, Sr. and Mildred Scott.
Growing up, Scott played football and little league baseball.
In high school, he played football and was on the wrestling team.
Scott graduated from Mainland High School in 1974. He attended Bethune-Cookman College (now University) where he played linebacker on the Wildcats’ football team for coaches Andy Hinson and the legendary Wesley Moore.
Scott latched on to a career in the medical field. He earned several educational certificates relating to the profession.
For over 40 years, he coached youth football. Scott was also instrumental in starting youth 7-on-7 tackle football.
In his free time, Scott enjoyed cooking, fishing and all outdoor and water sports.
Scott is survived by his wife, Patricia Scott; brother, Kenny Scott, Sr.; sister, Delrise Wilcox; son, Marvin Scott III; daughters, Latoria Scott; Sharene Scott; Brianna Scott; Brittany Scott and Christiane Christian Scott; and one granddaught
