In Augusta, Georgia, an elitist golf club’s self-interest matters more than a neighborhood’s legacy.
Where Augusta National Golf Club’s self-interest begins, a neighborhood’s legacy ends. When the deep-pocketed golf club became interested in adding nearby parking spaces, exorbitant amounts of money were used to entice all but one property owner to sell out the adjacent neighborhood.
The Thacker family were the property owners who refused to sell out. Their home’s legacy was more valuable than Augusta National’s money. They own the last remaining house of what used to be a vibrant neighborhood.
In time, the self-interest shark will devour the final piece of a neighborhood’s legacy.
