Melvin Wright’s journey to AIDS-HIV awareness began over 20 years ago. He is the founder of the Speak Out Club for HIV/AIDS at Deerfield Beach High School, the only active club of its kind in the Broward County school system.
Melvin is an active board member of the BLACC Leadership Aids Crisis Coalition. He is the Co-Chair for the Light-Up Sistrunk Toy Giveaway. He also serves as a committee member for the Zero Stigma HIV Walk.
As a mover and shaker, Melvin co-authored Life at the End of the Tunnel. This book recounts stories of individuals living with HIV and others who lost multiple family members to HIV. The book’s purpose: to educate and create an awareness of the stigmas associated with HIV/AIDS.
Melvin has received numerous awards for service to the community. In April of 2016, Melvin was awarded the Saving Grace award for his gallant service as an advocate for HIV and AIDS. Melvin was awarded the Uniting Efforts in Outreach Ministry and Distinguished Community Champion Award, as well as being featured in the documentary Saving Grace, which confronts HIV/AIDS in the Black community.
In addition to all the contributions that Melvin has provided to advocate for those impacted by HIV and AIDS, Melvin also manages to provide valuable resources to enrich the community such as his annual Turkey Giveaway, his annual toy drive, school supply Drive and providing FREE Back to School haircuts for young men and boys.
