DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. – A Douglas County high school senior is on her way to college, but she has a problem deciding which one to choose.
Jordan Nixon has been accepted to more than three-dozen schools and awarded more than $1.6 million in scholarships.
In all her 17 years, Nixon never realized how exciting a trip to the mailbox could be.
“The most I’ve gotten in one day is three, and that’s overwhelming,” Nixon said. “I’m just in shock. Howard, Hampton, University of Tampa, Alabama State, Johnson, Wofford.”
The number of colleges and universities that have sent Nixon acceptance letters is 39.
“She is doing everything we as a school ask our students to do,” Principal Andre Weaver said.
Weaver started his career at Douglas County High School the year Nixon was born. He said she’s an ace in the classroom, in sports and after-school clubs.
“She’s a hard worker, and she’s humble,” Weaver said.
And in an age where the rich and famous are accused of bribing college officials to get their children into prestigious universities, Nixon said you can do it the old-fashioned way.
“It starts on the first day of high school,” Nixon said. “Focus on your classwork, your tests, your homework, your essays, your grades and it can happen that way.”
Nixon hasn’t decided which university to attend yet — a nice problem to have. She has until May 1 to decide.
