South Florida political leader, Senator Shevrin “Shev” Jones, has secured the position of Chair of the Miami-Dade County Democratic Party’s executive committee. Senator Jones, currently representing District 34 in the Florida State Senate, emerged as the front-runner following his recent candidacy announcement.

Renowned for his dedication to education and community empowerment, Senator Jones brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Beginning his career as a teacher, he later founded L.E.A.D. Nation, an organization focused on fostering youth leadership and social entrepreneurship. His tenure in the Florida House, starting in 2012, saw him champion bipartisan causes, from advocating for incarcerated women to promoting youth sports safety and police body cameras. Recently, he has been a vocal advocate for the accurate teaching of Black history in Florida schools and has criticized the governor’s “Stop Woke Act.”

Currently representing Florida’s 34th Senate District, encompassing parts of Broward and Miami-Dade counties, Senator Jones expressed his commitment to revitalizing the Democratic Party in Miami-Dade County. He stressed the need for robust outreach and engagement with local communities, citing past failures resulting from neglecting these crucial aspects.

Senator Jones’ election marks a turning point for the party, which has encountered challenges in recent times. With support from prominent Democrats like Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Congressperson Frederica S. Wilson, Senator Jones aims to inject new energy into Florida politics.

Over 100 members of the Democratic Executive Committee cast their votes on April 26, with Senator Jones emerging as the clear choice for chair. Alongside him, Millie Herrera and Marco Reyes were elected as first vice chair and secretary, respectively, forming a dynamic new leadership team.

“We’ve seen what happens when we don’t invest in robust, focused outreach and take communities for granted. It’s clear this moment calls for a reset for our Miami-Dade County party,” Jones said.

In his new capacity, Senator Jones pledges to collaborate with organizers countywide to rebuild voter registration efforts, engage with candidates, and boost Democratic turnout in future elections. With his vision for a more inclusive and active Democratic Party, Senator Jones aspires to lead Miami-Dade Democrats into a promising new era of success at the polls.
