America has seemingly become accepting of, and perhaps even immune to, gun violence, whether it occurs in our homes, schools, or social environments. There have been 27 documented school shootings in 2026, and gun violence has become an all-too-common occurrence in recent years. We have witnessed shootings at HBCUs, murder-suicides that devastate families across the nation, and senseless criminal incidents involving firearms. The shooting near Florida A&M University’s Homecoming has become part of a disturbing pattern, following shootings at Tuskegee University, Albany State University, Delaware State University, and Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, among others. Thoughts and prayers follow school and church shootings, but little changes. We simply wait for the next incident.
I offer one solution: elect politicians who are willing to seriously address gun violence through reasonable legislation that respects the Second Amendment. We know there are steps that can be taken, so why has so little been done to end this scourge on our society? Call me paranoid or overly racially sensitive, but Florida, for example, permits open carry without a permit. Gun violence, including Black-on-Black crime, remains prevalent in our communities. I personally believe that the Republican-controlled state government, led by Governor Ron DeSantis, shows little concern as long as the violence remains largely confined to our communities. You may also recall the proliferation of gun sales when President Obama was first elected.
We must support politicians who oppose Citizens United, partisan gerrymandering, and an increasingly controversial Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS), and who reject any return to the dark days of slavery and Jim Crow.
These midterm elections are truly among the most important for us as a people. VOTE like Obama is running!
HBCU Football
Bethune-Cookman’s upset of No. 1 Jackson State is indicative of an ascending program. Wildcats head coach Raymond Woodie was an excellent choice to lead the team.
Although FAMU’s Homecoming loss to UAPB was disappointing, take heart, Rattlers! Quinn Gray has the potential to turn the program around. He is a proven winner, and there is reason to remain optimistic about the future.
NFL
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts reportedly developed blood clots in his leg after sustaining an injury during a game in London. He was reportedly permitted to fly back to the United States, allegedly without receiving blood thinners. His condition subsequently worsened as the clots traveled to his lungs, raising serious questions about the team’s handling of his medical situation. An investigation involving team and league officials has reportedly been initiated.
WNBA
The Atlanta Dream, led by Angel Reese, trail the Golden State Valkyries 3–2 in their best-of-seven series and are set to host Game 6. Having already defeated the Valkyries on the road, the Dream still have an opportunity to win the championship. A victory at home would force a decisive Game 7.
MLB
Finally, the Milwaukee Brewers are on the verge of sweeping a formidable Tampa Bay team after dominating the Devil Rays in Tampa and taking a commanding three-game lead. A comeback by Tampa Bay may be a bridge too far. The Brewers have made a compelling case as MLB’s best team in 2026.
However, we all know that “it ain’t over until the fat lady sings!”
