Nunnie on the Sideline

Sports is truly a microcosm of life, which accounts for its impact on so many – athlete and non athlete alike. The devastating blow inflicted on Colorado University superstar Travis Hunter by state rival Colorado State University’s Henry Blackburn, an egregious, unnecessary cheap shot, caused some zealots to threaten him with death. The outrageous lunacy was similar to death threats against our Attorney General and other prosecutors who dare bring charges against the maniacal, guilt-ridden former president,  45. I don’t even like saying or writing his name.

Thankfully, Travis and Henry demonstrated class, civility and humanity when they met and engaged in a friendly bowling competition on the CU campus, ending speculation about any lingering animosity. So proud of both of them.

A recent feature on Robbie Anderson, Dolphins wideout and South Plantation High graduate who donated equipment to the football program, got me to thinking: What other SPHS graduates made NFL or other professional league rosters. I had the privilege of being on the staff when Martin Cox (Vanderbilt, Chicago Bears) and Al Roberts (Miami, Dallas Cowboys) played. The late Alex Collins, RB, played for the Patriots and Ravens and John Franklin III played with the Memphis Showboats. Colin Cole also played in the league. If you know of others, I’d like to hear from you.

The Marlins made the playoffs and deserve our support and appreciation. They face the Phillies on the road Tuesday. It appears that they are ahead of their rebuilding plans.  Former Marlin Miguel Cabrera, who retired at season’s end, is for  certain a first ballot Hall of Famer.

Damar Hamlin played in a regular season game for the first time since his cardiac arrest episode last year nearly ended life, against the Dolphins of all teams. His is an incredibly inspiring and courageous story that all can appreciate.

Finally, the NFL is a bottom line business with hypocrites aplenty. The constant criticism of players, particularly quarterbacks by television analysts is too often unfair and over the top. Has Joe Burrow suddenly become a bum or will Zac Wilson ever catch a break. The NFL is a bottom line business but the overbearing criticism could be assuaged.

The two best teams, the Las Vegas Aces and the New York Liberty, are in the WNBA finals. Check them out if you have a moment. You won’t be disappointed.
