Nunnie on the Sideline

In my NOTS last week, I contemplated whether some of my readers may have been intrigued by my support of Michigan over Alabama in last week’s semifinal erstwhile CFP championship contest which I stated was unapologetically political. The  rationale is simple: Michigan is a blue state that supported President Biden and our American democratic values and principles. Alabama, despite a preponderance of Black athletes, represents a state that elects racist politicians like Tommy Tupperware aka Tuberville, et al, who consistently vote against minority interests. The same people who cheer for our athletes on Saturday vote for racist politicians to represent them in congress and the senate. I am tired of the hypocrisy and would encourage our athletes to consider other alternatives. It didn’t matter to me which team won the CFP (Michigan won 34-13) since both represented Blue states.

The sister-in-law of deceased HOF Coach Marcia Pinder contacted me to solicit THE Gazette’s support of a project that she is totally dedicated to and immersed in: transporting a statue symbolizing Coach Pinder’s storied career from the Bahamas to Ft. Lauderdale to be displayed permanently in her honor. An accompanying flyer provides details about how the public can assist.

Sadly,  the gifted, talented Ja Morant of the NBA Memphis Grizzlies, who was suspended for the first 25 games of the season for conduct detrimental to the league – firearms violation – suffered a season ending injury during practice. It is my hope and prayer that he lean on his family and faith, experience a successful rehab and comeback stronger and healthier next year. Personal choices will determine positive outcome.

At Mt. Hermon AME, we have an amazing youth ministry. Last month I observed Quyis Dudley, built like actor Terry Crews, participate in service, not only reading scripture but singing a solo with choir. Unable to contain my enthusiasm, I waved him over for a brief chat which revealed his athletic prowess as a football player at Dillard High. What an impressive young man. I told him that I wanted to do a feature article on him. I subsequently spoke with Dillard head coach, Demetrius Mincey,  who was in total agreement. It is forthcoming. Our young people need to know the Lord.

PS – I really appreciate those who read my columns and respond. Thank you so much !!!!
