Florida International University sophomore Oumy Diop is on the cusp of realizing her lifelong dream as she prepares to compete in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. Born and raised in Grenoble, France, to Senegalese parents, Diop will proudly represent Senegal in the 100-meter butterfly event.

“It’s an immense honor to represent Senegal,” Diop said. “My parents are overjoyed, and it means the world to them.”

Diop’s journey to the Olympics began at age 5, when she first started competing in swimming events. Her dedication and talent have earned her a spot among the world’s top athletes. As the only female swimmer from Senegal competing in this year’s Olympics, Diop is determined to make the most of this opportunity.

“Competing in the Olympics is a dream come true,” Diop said. “I’m still in awe, and I want to cherish every moment.”

Diop’s impressive collegiate career at FIU has been marked by numerous accolades, including setting a new freshman record in the 100-meter butterfly and helping her team win their first conference title. She has also excelled in international competitions, representing Senegal at the African Championships and African Games.

For Diop, swimming is more than just a sport – it’s her sanctuary. “In the water, it’s just me and my thoughts,” she said. “I can escape the pressures of school and life.”

As Diop prepares to take the Olympic stage, she is also looking forward to inspiring young athletes in Senegal as an ambassador for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games. “I want to be a role model for female athletes in my country,” she said.

With her childhood dream within reach, Oumy Diop is ready to make a splash in Paris and make her family, university, and country proud.
