OUR YOUNG HERO: 13-year-old John Rivers is comforted by his grandmother, Lessie Laramore, as he lay in the hospital bed recuperating from an attempt to rescue his half-brother from being attacked by a pit bull. John tried to fight off the dog with a kitchen knife and in so doing he sliced his hand up requiring surgery and several stitches.
