In an exciting 36-34 come from behind victory, the Miami Dolphins overcame some early unforced errors and at times suspect defensive play to defeat the Los Chargers in the beautifully constructed So Fi Stadium in Inglewood, California, which they share with the Los Angeles Rams. The game could have easily been called the T&T Show in honor of spectacular performances by  quarterback Tua Tagovailoa,  who was 28-45, for 466 yards and  3 touchdowns with 1 interception,  and Tyreek Hill, who caught 2 of those passes for touchdowns (including the game winner)  and had 11 receptions overall for 215 yards. As the Dolphins’ captain, in an interview after the game Tyreek said, “ Maybe I’m not just a cheetah; perhaps I’m a lion baby, in response to whether anyone could guard him. His game was so spectacular that this was his third game with over 200 yards receiving and at least 2 touchdowns, the most in the post Super Bowl era. At this rate he’s a sure Hall of Famer. When Tua (.62 completion percentage, 110 qbr.) is on the field and healthy, he’s as good as any quarterback in the NFL at delivering the ball to his receivers.

The Dolphins offensively clicked on all cylinders, marching all the way down the field before a crucial, red zone turnover between Tua and center Connor Williams on the snap exchange gave the ball to the Chargers who,  after winning the toss, deferred until second half. During the course of game, the Dolphins appeared inept at thwarting the high flying Chargers offensive juggernaut under the direction of QB Justin Herbert. They were stifled in their effort to pressure Herbert into an errant play as Jason Phillips’ commendable attempts to sack him fell short and Bradley Chubb was a non-factor. Herbert consistently converted third down situations leading to Chargers scores and an electrifying game that would only be decided by a gut-wrenching ending. Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio dialed up crucial blitzes to seal the Dolphins victory, ensuring a total team effort. The defense appeared to miss Jalen Ramsey, whom the Dolphins acquired in the offseason in free agency. A more consistent pass rush can improve the team’s defensive production, a necessity in the most talented division in the AFC, arguably the entire league.

Offensively, the Dolphins receivers were outstanding, especially River Cracraft, Braxton Berrios, Jaylen Waddle and tight end Durham Smythe. It’s difficult to double Tyreek with an equally explosive talent like Waddle on the other side. And even without starting tackle Terron Armstead, the offensive line played well, aided by offensive schemes which demanded that Tua not hold the ball too long. Takeaway: when Tua is healthy and upright, he’s as good as any of the top quarterbacks in the league. A deep playoff run is a distinct possibility. What say you, Dolphans?
