āIām honored to have been chosen as The U.S. Jazz Ambassador for the 2013 Suriname Jazz Festival!ā__ Randy Corinthian
Ā Ā Ā Ā Suriname is located on the northeast coast of South America, bordering Brazil to the south, Guyana to the west, and French Guiana to the east. The Suriname Jazz Festival states as one of its goals to promote jazz music and to educate, particularly youth, about jazz music, a fundamentally American music form. The festival sponsors workshops for youth to educate them about jazz and mentor them in creating their own music.
On the opening day of the festival, the atmosphere was super-charged! Unkieās House of Blues exceeded capacity, and there were people lining the streets; standing, sitting, singing, dancing, eating, and drinking. Everyone was ready for a great time! To open the festivities, they were given a healthy dose of local artist performing original compositions, as well as many Surinamese favorites. Throughout the night, they were treated to a samplerās portion of the featured artists which included, Dennis Lapassion (French Guiana), Randy Corinthian (USA), and Bruut (Netherlands). All 3 artists took the stage and performed amazingly leaving the audience wanting more, and setting high expectations for what was in store throughout the festival!
The Wine & Jazz event at Spice Quest was spectacular! (Standing room only) It was the perfect atmosphere for winding down after a long work week. Word on the (Surinamese) streets is, āthere are two things that you absolutely must try when visiting Suriname; Borgoe ā82 and Parbo Bierā – I plead the 5th!!
Giving it up āone more onceā for the people of Suriname. As you can see, Paramaribo is HOTT!! Although it is a tropical region, we were not afforded the cool breeze normally associated with island life, or even that of South Florida. Suriname is much closer to the equator. However, it was quite alright! When people show you love and treat you well, you have to be willing to give up a little bit of āelbow greaseā. Besides, Iām no stranger to hard work. My tenure at Florida A&M University (Marching 100) prepared me for days like these..
I had a wonderful time in Paramaribo, Suriname! The opportunity to share my passion for music and education with receptive audiences in Suriname was a humbling, yet inspiring experience. It was ex-citing to be a part of the cultural exchange program, and to perform during The Suriname Jazz Festival 2013. I am grateful for the many new friends acquired during this experience, and I look forward to staying connected to them and acquiring new ones around the world…
As I gaze across the horizon pondering that which is before me, I must remember to be thankful for that which is behind me. I will, therefore, pray for Godās continued blessings on my life, and ask that you do the same. For if God is for me, who can be against me?
