    FRANKLY SPEAKING

In the midst of folk making 4th of July plans I was asked what were my plans?

I explained I had no plans because I had nothing to celebrate!

The signing of The Declaration of Independence had nothing to do with people of color as we were enslaved by some of those who signed the historic document.

Freedom from British rule only emboldened them to withhold the privileges of Freedom from people who look like me!

Juneteenth is much more an important date for me because it embodies the ideals of

freedom while the 4th of July saw slavery in full affect.

Many southerners still celebrate a war they lost, but I will not be found praising a date that did nothing to free African Americans.

It is sad that some of us with Juneteenth to celebrate choose to give credence to the birth of a nation that even now erects barriers to and distorts our history as well as our freedoms.

I am not anti American; I am anti bullschitt!

In the words of Malcolm X, “ we didn’t land on Plymouth Rock. Plymouth Rock landed on us”.

I’m amazed when folk can’t accept criticism. I love my family but it doesn’t mean they are all perfect just like these less than United States.

No Fireworks here, but I’m Fired up because America must do better by its African American citizens.

My 4th is to celebrate well on June 19th every year.
